Pop superstar Taylor Swift has publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for the presidency, putting an end to speculation about whether she would reveal her political stance ahead of the November election.
Swift shared her support on Instagram shortly after Harris’s debate with former President Donald Trump, her Republican opponent, aired on ABC News. “Like many of you, I tuned into the debate tonight. If you haven’t done so yet, it’s a great moment to educate yourself on the issues and where each candidate stands on what matters most to you. As a voter, I always make sure to watch and read as much as I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country,” Swift posted.
The singer also addressed recent misinformation involving AI-generated content falsely showing her endorsing Trump. “Recently, I learned that an AI-generated version of ‘me’ was falsely endorsing Donald Trump on his website. It really brought my fears about AI and the spread of misinformation to the forefront. It made me realize that I must be transparent about my voting intentions. The easiest way to counter false information is with the truth. I’ll be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Swift declared.
Kamala Harris became the Democratic Party’s nominee in August following President Joe Biden’s decision not to run in 2024. Shortly after, Harris named Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, a choice that Swift praised.
“I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the causes I deeply care about. She’s a steady and talented leader, and I believe our country can achieve much more if led by calm rather than chaos. Her choice of running mate, @timwalz, truly impressed me. He has been a consistent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF access, and women’s reproductive rights for decades,” Swift continued in her endorsement.
Swift concluded her post with a message to her fans: “I’ve done my research and made my choice. Now it’s your turn. To all the first-time voters out there, remember to register and consider voting early. I’ll include links in my story for registration and early voting information.”
She ended her post humorously, referring to herself as a “childless cat lady,” a playful nod to a jab previously made by Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, against Democrats.
When asked about Swift’s endorsement on Fox News, Trump labeled her a “very liberal person” and suggested she would “probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.”
Swift’s political involvement has increased significantly in recent years. Although she remained mostly silent on political issues during her early career, she began publicly supporting Democratic candidates in 2018 and has since become an outspoken advocate for women’s rights, reproductive freedom, and LGBTQ+ issues. Her political awakening was notably featured in her 2020 documentary “Miss Americana,” where she expressed regret for not speaking out sooner.
Swift’s endorsement has energized a portion of her fanbase known as the Swifties, who have mobilized as part of the 2024 election cycle under the banner “Swifties for Kamala.” Though Swift herself is not directly involved, the group has gained significant traction, raising over $122,000 during a two-hour kickoff event in August that featured prominent speakers like Senator Elizabeth Warren and singer Carole King.
