Legendary R&B Icon Frankie Beverly, Philadelphia Native, Passes Away at 77

Music lovers in Philadelphia and across the globe are in mourning following the passing of legendary R&B singer, songwriter, and producer Frankie Beverly. The beloved founder of the iconic funk and soul band Maze died on Tuesday at the age of 77, as announced by his family on Wednesday morning.

Beverly, whose birth name was Howard Stanley Beverly, was a native of Philadelphia, where he was born and raised. In an emotional statement, his family expressed their grief, requesting privacy during this difficult time. “Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience. During this time, as we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection, and remembrance, we kindly ask for privacy and understanding, allowing us the space to grieve in our own way,” the family shared in an online message. “This period is one of healing, and your respect for our need for solitude is appreciated as we honor the memory of our beloved Howard Stanley Beverly, known to the world as Frankie Beverly.”

The statement further highlighted Beverly’s passion for his music, family, and friends. “He lived his life with pure soul as one would say, and for us, no one did it better. He lived for his music, family, and friends. Love one another as he would want that for us all,” the family added.

Frankie Beverly’s musical journey began in his hometown of Philadelphia, where he attended Germantown High School. He first formed the group The Blenders before transitioning to another group, The Butlers, with whom he recorded several tracks.

His talent soon caught the attention of legendary producer and songwriter Kenny Gamble, leading to several releases under the Philadelphia-based label Cameo Parkway. The 6000 block of Norwood Street in Germantown was recently named in his honor, commemorating his contributions to the city’s rich musical heritage.

After relocating to the West Coast, Beverly’s group underwent a couple of name changes—from Raw Soul to the band that would become known as Maze. Under Beverly’s leadership, Maze went on to release nine gold albums and became a staple in the R&B and soul music scene.

Earlier this year, Beverly bid farewell to the stage after a remarkable 50-year career with a final performance at the Dell Music Center in North Philadelphia. His passing marks the end of an era, but his music and legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

As of now, Beverly’s family has not disclosed the cause of his death.
