Soccer icon Alex Morgan is about to grow her family once again. On September 5, Morgan revealed two significant life updates: she is pregnant with her second child and is stepping away from professional soccer. Morgan and her husband, former soccer player Servando Carrasco, are already parents to their 4-year-old daughter, Charlie.
“I’ll get straight to it—I’m retiring,” Morgan, 35, shared in a heartfelt video posted on social media. “This decision has been a long time coming, and I finally have complete clarity and peace about it. At the start of 2024, I knew deep down that this would be my last season playing soccer.”
Morgan’s video also included a surprise announcement about her growing family. “This isn’t the retirement video I initially planned because, well, Charlie is going to be a big sister,” Morgan continued. “I’m pregnant, and though it was unexpected, we’re absolutely thrilled. Family is everything to me.”
A Love That Began in College
Morgan and Carrasco’s romance dates back to their college days at the University of California, Berkeley, where they began dating during their freshman year. Their relationship grew stronger over the years, and in 2013, Carrasco proposed. The couple tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in Santa Barbara, California, in 2014. Now, they are preparing to welcome their second child, embarking on a new chapter as a family of four.
Meeting Alex Morgan: Carrasco’s First Impressions
In a 2019 interview with The Athletic, Carrasco reminisced about meeting Morgan for the first time at UC Berkeley when they were both teenagers. “I met Alex when I was 18. We were both student-athletes at Cal and started dating during our freshman year,” he shared. “We’ve been together ever since.”
Carrasco was instantly captivated by Morgan’s athletic talent. “What struck me immediately was her speed on the field, even though she was wearing a huge knee brace due to ACL surgery just six months earlier. It was incredible to see her bounce back so quickly. Despite her injury, she was still lightning fast,” he recalled.
Carrasco’s Own Soccer Career
Carrasco, now 36, shares his wife’s passion for soccer. His professional journey began in 2011 when he was drafted 27th overall in the MLS SuperDraft. He started his career with the Seattle Sounders FC and later played for various teams, including Sporting Kansas City and the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Supporting Morgan’s Career
Despite his own soccer achievements, Carrasco has always been Morgan’s biggest supporter. In his interview with The Athletic, he admitted to feeling nervous when watching his wife play. “You just want them to succeed so much,” he said.
Carrasco emphasized the importance of being a supportive partner. “Once she’s on the field, there’s nothing I can do but cheer her on and support her in every way possible. It’s nerve-racking not being able to help, but that’s part of loving someone,” he explained.
A Proposal to Remember
Carrasco proposed to Morgan in December 2013 during a festive fireworks display in Manhattan Beach, California. Morgan recounted the romantic moment in an interview with The Knot. “He planned the proposal around the annual fireworks show. He asked me to stand up, and then he got down on one knee,” she said. “We celebrated with champagne at my dad’s house, surrounded by family and friends.”
The couple exchanged vows on New Year’s Eve in 2014 in a beautiful ceremony attended by their loved ones in Santa Barbara, California. “Being surrounded by family and friends in such a stunning setting on New Year’s Eve was simply magical,” Morgan told People.
Welcoming Their First Child
Morgan and Carrasco became parents on May 7, 2020, when they welcomed their daughter, Charlie. “She made us wait longer than expected, but I should have known she would do things her way,” Morgan wrote on Instagram, affectionately calling Charlie her “super moon baby.”
Carrasco shared his joy in a separate post featuring a close-up photo of their newborn. “The day Charlie was born was the best day of my life,” he wrote. “We love you so much, baby girl. Alex, you’re such a warrior.”
