Former President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has publicly expressed his support for a Florida ballot initiative aimed at legalizing recreational marijuana use for adults aged 21 and over. Trump voiced his endorsement via Truth Social on Sunday night, aligning himself with the state’s proposed Amendment 3, which seeks to allow adult marijuana use.
Trump’s statement follows comments made in late August, where he suggested he was open to the idea of legalizing recreational marijuana in Florida. His support for Amendment 3 marks a notable divergence from some prominent figures within his own party, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who opposes the measure.
Trump, who will be running against Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, in the upcoming November 5th presidential election, currently finds himself in a tight race, with polls showing the candidates nearly neck and neck.
“As I have previously stated, I believe it is time to end needless arrests and incarcerations of adults for small amounts of marijuana for personal use,” Trump wrote in his post. “As a Floridian, I will be voting YES on Amendment 3 this November.”
Trump’s latest comments also hint at broader legislative ambitions, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve access to banking services for cannabis-related businesses operating legally within their respective states. This advocacy extends back to his term as president from 2017 to 2021, when various legislative measures were discussed but not fully enacted.
“As President, we will continue to focus on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana to a Schedule 3 drug, and work with Congress to pass common sense laws, including safe banking for state authorized companies,” Trump added in his social media post.
