Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX’s Starlink system, which aims to connect mobile phones via satellite, will provide free access to emergency services for all users. The SpaceX CEO emphasized this commitment in a tweet on Tuesday, stating, “Can’t have a situation where someone dies because they forgot or were unable to pay for it.”
This statement comes as SpaceX seeks approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to commercially launch its “direct to cell” Starlink technology. However, the proposal has faced opposition from major telecommunications companies, including AT&T and Verizon.
SpaceX recently appealed to the FCC, highlighting the potential benefits of its technology. The company argues that Starlink could enable emergency alerts to reach all wireless users in areas without cellular coverage, regardless of whether they are Starlink subscribers. This capability hinges on Starlink’s use of orbiting satellites to deliver cellular and internet connectivity to users on the ground, filling gaps in existing coverage.
Musk further elaborated on the potential impact of the service in a tweet on Tuesday, stating, “This could help a lot of people if they are stranded in the wilderness.” He added in a subsequent tweet, “After thinking it through, SpaceX Starlink will provide emergency services access for mobile phones for people in distress for free. This applies worldwide, subject to approval by country governments.”
While specific details about the service are yet to be disclosed, the initiative seems to draw parallels with Apple’s Emergency SOS feature, currently available on iPhone 14 and later models. Apple’s service has already proven lifesaving for individuals in remote locations lacking conventional cell coverage.
SpaceX is actively pursuing FCC approval to partner with T-Mobile to launch the cellular Starlink system, potentially as soon as this fall. Musk’s recent tweets may be part of a broader strategy to sway the FCC’s decision. In response to Musk’s announcement, GOP FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr expressed support, tweeting, “Direct to cell technology will really benefit public safety communications and first responders.”
However, SpaceX is also seeking a waiver from the FCC to operate its cellular Starlink satellites beyond standard radio frequency parameters, citing a need for comprehensive coverage and high-speed connectivity. This request has drawn criticism from AT&T and Verizon, who argue that the expanded use could cause significant radio interference.
AT&T has expressed concerns in a recent statement to the FCC, claiming that SpaceX’s proposal could result in “an 18% average reduction in network downlink throughput in an operational and representative AT&T PCS C Block market deployment.” In response, SpaceX countered these claims in a letter to the FCC, accusing AT&T and Verizon of attempting to block consumer access to Starlink’s technology.
Moreover, the competition is heating up as AT&T and Verizon prepare to roll out their own satellite-based internet services for mobile phones through the startup AST SpaceMobile. This underscores the competitive landscape as SpaceX’s cellular Starlink system is poised to challenge existing telecom giants, potentially reshaping the future of mobile connectivity.
