Heather Lyke Fired as Pittsburgh Panthers AD, University Seeks ‘New Vision’ for Athletics

Heather Lyke, the athletic director of the Pittsburgh Panthers, was dismissed on Monday as the university announced its decision to seek a new direction amid the rapidly evolving landscape of college sports. The decision reflects the need for a fresh vision to help navigate the complexities of modern athletics.

“Heather’s leadership since her arrival at Pitt in 2017 has been pivotal during a unique period in college athletics, and we appreciate her guidance throughout that time,” said Chancellor Joan Gabel in a statement. “However, as we move into a new era of college athletics, which seems to be changing every day, we recognize the necessity for new leadership and a renewed vision for our athletics department.”

Sources informed ESPN that Lyke and Gabel, who officially took on the role of Pitt’s chancellor in April, had disagreements on multiple topics, including policies regarding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL).

The university has appointed Jennifer Tuscano, the current executive associate athletic director, to serve as interim athletic director until a permanent replacement for Lyke is found.

Throughout her time at Pitt, Lyke made significant strides in enhancing the profile of the athletics department. Under her leadership, the football team clinched the ACC championship in 2021, the women’s volleyball team reached its first three Final Four appearances, and the men’s soccer team made it to the College Cup twice in the last four seasons. Her contributions were recognized when she was named one of the 2023 Cushman & Wakefield AD of the Year Award recipients by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Earlier this year, Lyke shared her positive outlook about her future at Pitt in an interview with ESPN. “I feel great about it,” she stated. “I love it. I love the people. I love my new chancellor. We’ve got an awesome board. I’ve got an awesome group of coaches and the right number of sports. I’m a Midwest kid. It fits me. I’m really happy.”

Despite her expressed contentment, Lyke had been actively exploring other opportunities. She was recently a finalist for the athletic director position at Northwestern and had pursued other roles, including one at Ohio State earlier this year. Although Lyke’s contract was set to expire in June 2025, ongoing discussions about an extension failed to result in a new agreement.
