Joe Wolf, a former North Carolina Tar Heels captain under the legendary coach Dean Smith, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday at the age of 59, as confirmed by the Milwaukee Bucks. Wolf had been serving as an assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd, the G League affiliate of the Bucks.

Wolf’s basketball journey began in high school, where he earned All-American honors in 1983. He later joined the University of North Carolina, playing alongside icons like Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins. During his senior year in 1986-87, he was a co-captain for the Tar Heels, sharing leadership duties with Kenny Smith. Wolf’s college career was marked by significant achievements, including North Carolina’s impressive 115-22 record during his four seasons. The team advanced to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight twice during his tenure.
Standing at 6-foot-11, Wolf played as both a center and forward. His leadership and court skills earned him a spot in the 1987 NBA Draft, where he was selected as the 13th overall pick by the LA Clippers. Over his 11-year NBA career, Wolf played for seven teams, including stints with Denver, Charlotte, Orlando, Portland, Boston, and Milwaukee. Returning to his home state of Wisconsin, he led Kohler High School to three state championships.
